Towards the end of last season Cavani, 34, signed a one-year contract extension with United.

During his first campaign at the club the veteran forward scored 17 goals in 39 games across all competitions.

Ronaldo’s return is likely to push Cavani down the pecking order but it is possible that the two experienced attackers could play together, should Solskjaer make tweaks to his system.

Cavani is back in training with United and could return to the squad for the game away to Wolves on Sunday.
