Manchester United: Kieran Trippier ‘remains interested’ in moving to Old Trafford from Atletico

Atletico Madrid full back Kieran Trippier ‘remains interested’ in joining Manchester United despite the club failing to sign him last summer… but Red Devils ‘may now face competition from mega-rich Newcastle’

  • Atletico full back Kieran Trippier was a target for Manchester United last summer
  • But United had been unable to wrap up a deal to provide competition in defence
  • Despite this, reports indicate Trippier remains keen on moving to Old Trafford
  • Newcastle, fresh from their big-money takeover, have been linked with a swoop

Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier is still keen on joining Manchester United in the future despite the club failing to sign him last summer, according to reports.

United have held a long-term interest in Trippier, 31, and viewed him as the ideal candidate to provide competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right back.

However, a move did not materialise with Old Trafford chiefs believed to have been reluctant to meet his price tag, but Trippier remains interested in sealing the switch.

That has been claimed by AS in Spain, although it remains to be seen whether United themselves would be willing to reignite their pursuit of their former target.

Sportsmail reported back in June that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was plotting a swoop for England international Trippier to bolster his options at the back.

United have struggled defensively this season across all competitions, with first-choice Wan-Bissaka the target of heavy criticism for several erratic displays.

The report from AS reveals that Trippier ‘still likes the idea’ of heading to United, although they may also face competition from a Premier League rival.

Indeed, Newcastle – fresh from their mega-money takeover – have been credited with interest in the ex-Tottenham man and would be able to match his valuation.

Meanwhile, Trippier told Sportsmail last month about his desire to return to the top-flight in England one day, and has looked back at his time in Spain fondly.

‘I know what I came here to do and I have done it,’ Trippier said.

On a potential homecoming, he added: ‘I would love to play in the Premier League again.’

At the weekend, Trippier was taken to hospital after suffering an apparent serious shoulder injury in the early stages of Atletico’s 3-3 draw with Valencia.

The versatile full back was visibly in a lot of distress and was replaced by Sime Vrsaljko. He was then rushed off to a nearby facility.

In positive news, a broken collarbone was ruled out following checks.

‘After being taken to hospital and undergoing tests, Trippier’s bone injury has been ruled out,’ a club statement said.

‘The Englishman suffered a left acromioclavicular subluxation.’
