Manchester United receive boost in Harry Maguire pursuit as Leicester close in on defenders Filip Benkovic and Caglar Soyuncu for £35m

  • Jose Mourinho remains keen on a move for Leicester defender Harry Maguire
  • Foxes are closing in on two centre backs but still want to keep the England star
  • Filip Benkovic and Caglar Soyuncu set to join the club for a combined £35.5m
  • Leicester are ready to offer Maguire a new £75,000-a-week contract to stay

Leicester are closing in on two new centre backs as they look to ensure they are strong enough to cope with the departure of Harry Maguire.

The England defender remains a target for Manchester United, with a late, £65million bid still a possibility as Jose Mourinho looks to improve his back four.

The Foxes want to keep Maguire and tie him down to a new contract regardless of their transfer business, but have still moved to sign two defenders before Thursday’s transfer deadline.

As revealed by Sportsmail on Wednesday, Claude Puel is on the brink of landing 6ft 4in Filip Benkovic from Dinamo Zagreb in a £13m deal.

And Leicester are also closing in on Freiburg centre back Caglar Soyuncu, according to The Daily Mirror.

They claim that a deal worth £22.5 plus add-ons is on the verge of being agreed as Puel is given the funds generated by Riyad Mahrez’s £60m move to Manchester City.
