Manchester United’s World Cup absentees have escaped the Christmas cold of England for the warmth of Spain as Erik ten Hag’s Reds get put through their paces ahead of the Premier League’s resumption.

United stars have continued their training at their Cadiz base ahead of an upcoming friendly clash with the La Liga hosts.

Ten Hag was pictured leading drills in training as a mixture of travelling first-team players and academy hopefuls returned from their mid-season breaks due to the ongoing World Cup in Qatar.

United stars David de Gea, Donny van de Beek, and Anthony Martial have all been involved as Ten Hag and his in-form talents prepare to kick-start the domestic season back into life on December 21.

However, the team are without £73million man Jadon Sancho after United chief Ten Hag decided to leave the 22-year-old attacker back in Manchester.

A statement on the club’s official website read: ‘Jadon Sancho is continuing his individual training programme as part of a process to get back to his highest level. The club is fully supporting him in this.’ 

Man United will take on Burnley once the World Cup concludes itself on December 18, with many of the club’s international stars still involved with their respective country’s as the competition enters the quarter-finals.

Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, and Harry Maguire remain on international duty with England, while Raphael Varane, Tyrell Malacia, Fred, Antony, Lisandro Martinez, and Casemiro all remain with their nation’s as well.

Joining experienced players in the heat of the Spanish sun were academy breakthroughs Alejandro Garnacho, who had starred in the pre-World Cup Premier League run-in, along with Zidane Iqbal and returning outcast Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

United will play Cadiz on Wednesday before meeting Real Betis in their last friendly encounter on Saturday 10 December.
