Authorities in suburban Boston briefly placed a public square on lockdown after police said an armed man robbed a bank and then shot at an officer before fleeing on Wednesday morning.

The incident took place just before 10am at the Middlesex Federal Savings Bank on College Avenue in Davis Square in Somerville.

Police said a man walked into the bank and fired a round before attempting to steal money, WBZ-TV reported.

‘An officer entered the bank through an another door, the officer and the suspect exchanged gunfire,’ Police Chief David Fallon said. 

Several people were inside the bank at the time of the gunfire exchange, but no one was injured.
