One hot chip lover’s salty quest to find the best value minimum serving of the deep fried treat has gone viral.

Brandon Gatgens has spent the past 10 months visiting takeaway shops across Melbourne, each time ordering a minimum serving of chips.

He has weighed each serving minus the packaging and then calculated the price per 100 grams.

The results were posted to the Minimum Chips Melbourne Instagram page dedicated to documenting his mission.

‘It all started at the pub with two questions: how much should you pay for minimum chips and how many chips should you get?,’ Mr Gatgens told 3AW.

‘Everyone’s got a different answer.’

Mr Gatgens’ mission began in West Footscray on Australia Day, where 532 grams of chips set him back $3.

He has since visited another 24 more outlets to compare their minimum servings with more than 10,100 Instagram fans now following his quest.

The current leader on price is Hobsons Bay Fish and Chip Shop in the port suburb of Williamstown, where he received 688 grams of chips for $4, which worked out to be 58 cents per 109 grams.

‘This fish n chips shop has been around since the 1980s. l’ve seen old and new owners come and go .. always served small amount of chips. But are tasty,’ one man commented on his post.

Mr Gatgens was surprised at the big differentials in price and serving sizes.

‘It’s really, really vast from what you pay to what you get. We’ve had the big $6 minimum chips which has come in at 300g and we’ve had a $3 minimum chips that’s come in close to 700g,’ Mr Gatgens told 3AW.

He admitted his quest has taken a toll on his waistline and he’s had to go out one notch on his belt since January.

But he insists his search is ‘for the good of the country’.

‘I had someone suggest I get a job with the weights and measurements government department,’ he told 10 News Daily.

‘Lots of people are nominating me for Australian of the year.’
