Map from the 1920s shows New Zealand appearing TWICE

Map from the 1920s shows New Zealand appearing TWICE – as Jacinda Ardern campaigns for the small island nation to stop being forgotten about

  • A map featuring New Zealand twice has excited some Kiwis on a Reddit thread
  • Reddit user added the image to thread dedicated to maps without New Zealand
  • The map was made by Stanfords in London in 1920 and since emerged online

A map of New Zealand from the 1920s which shows the country twice has been shared online and Kiwis are loving it after being forgotten so often in the past.

On a Reddit threat titled MapsWithoutNZ, where users frequently share world maps which do not include New Zealand, one user broke the trend.

‘I didn’t know there were two New Zealand’s in the world in 1920,’ the user wrote alongside a map showing the country on each side.

The image received a 78 per cent up vote form users who were also quick to chime in.

‘This is getting out of hand, now there’s two of them!’ one user wrote.

‘Just one. The other is the Old Zealand,’ another joked.

‘Yeah we don’t mention the other NZ anymore. Let’s just say there’s a reason Best NZ went nuclear-free. On the bright side Peter Jackson didn’t have to CGI the Mordor LOTR scenes,’ a third added.

The map was produced by Stanfords in London in 1920. The mistake is believed to be a printing error.

In May 2018, a campaign was launched by comedian Rhys Darby, of Flight of the Conchords fame, to put the country back on world maps.

In a spoof video, Darby can be seen pointing out instances of the country being forgotten about and coming up with conspiracies as to why this is the case.

He then asks for Jacinda Ardern’s help to rectify the problem and even jokingly refers to her as ‘Cindy’.

In the clip, Darby can be seen telling the Prime Minister: ‘We’re a bit of a fiddly looking shaped country, a bit like a half-eaten lamb chop. Perhaps people are just leaving us off, thinking we’re a mistake?’

He also points out high-profile gaffes when New Zealand has been left off maps, including those by The Smithsonian Natural History Museum, Central Park Zoo, Starbucks and Ikea.

New Zealand is home to 4.7 million people and is located in the south west Pacific Ocean, around 1,240 miles from Sydney.

The island nation has a landmass bigger than the size of Great Britain, and was voted the ‘best travel destination’ by Lonely Planet two years in a row.
