Marc Jacobs Spring 2018 Beauty Look at NYFW

Forget everything you think you know about cat-eye liner. At Marc Jacobs’ Spring 2018 show on Wednesday, make-up artist Diane Kendal took the feline flick in an entirely different direction – sometimes literally.

In a feat we didn’t even know was possible, the pro dreamt up a total of eight different lined looks that were painstakingly applied on models before they hit the runway.

Bella Hadid modeled a thick, dramatic style that covered nearly her entire eyelid, while girl-of-the-moment Kaia Gerber was given a more traditional look, with a thin flick at the outer corners of her eyes. Taylor Hill’s was similar, but instead of a rounded shape at her inner corners, it was pointed.

The cat’s meow: Kaia Gerber, 16, looked fierce with a striking cat-eye as she closed Marc Jacobs’ Spring 2018 show on Wednesday

The cat-eye style for each model was chosen based on her individual eye shape and created by layering several black eyeliner formulas.

The Marc Jacobs Beauty Fineliner Ultra-Skinny Gel Eye Crayon, Highliner Gel Eye Crayon and Magic Marc’er Precision Pen Waterproof Liquid eyeliners were all used backstage.

The team of make-up artists led by Diane also had plenty of cotton swabs and make-up remover on hand to ensure a precise finish. Each cat-eye reportedly took 30 minutes to complete.

To keep the focus on the striking eye, minimal make-up was used elsewhere. Foundation, highlighter, lip balm and a swipe of nude rose lipstick rounded out the look.

Winging it: Model Winnie Harlow, 23, loved her thickly-lined look so much that she kept it on after the show

Switching it up: Fresh takes on the look were also seen on the runways of Tom Ford (pictured) and Philipp Plein this week

Diane wasn’t the only backstage artist who managed to breathe new life into the classic make-up look this season.

Pat McGrath and Yadim created rounded, thumb-print-like flicks at Tom Ford and Jason Wu respectively, and at Philipp Plein, Yadim drew lines of black along the top and bottom lash lines but didn’t connect them, creating a negative-space effect.

If you’ve yet to master cat-eye liner, clearly, there’s no time like the present to hone your skills.
