Real Madrid defender Marcelo hit out at rivals Barcelona after Madrid progressed to the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday.

Madrid beat Juventus 4-3 on aggregate, courtesy of a Cristiano Ronaldo winner from the penalty spot in the 97th minute.

Juve had clawed back a three-goal first-leg deficit at the Bernabeu and it looked as if the game was heading into extra-time until Lucas Vazquez was fouled by Medhi Benatia in the box.

The Bernabeu crowd almost witnessed a remarkable comeback from Massimiliano Allegri’s side but Roma did produce the spectacular comeback on Tuesday night against Barcelona.

Roma were 4-1 down from the away first leg of the quarter-final tie but won 3-0 in Rome to progress to the Champions League semi-finals on away goals.

And Madrid captain for the night, Marcelo, took the opportunity to belittle Spanish rivals Barcelona after his side’s victory.

‘We should face and we did everything possible to go through,’ he said.

‘What happened to Barcelona wasn’t going to happen to us because we’re Real Madrid.’

Gianluigi Buffon was infuriated by referee Michael Oliver’s decision to award Madrid a penalty in the 93rd minute and was sent off for his aggressive reaction but Marcelo insisted there was no doubt over the spot-kick.

He said: ‘The penalty was very clear.’

Marcelo’s Madrid will find out who they face in the last four out of Liverpool, Bayern Munich or Roma in Friday’s draw.
