The cadaver of Texas’ basketball season hadn’t even turned cold yet before rumors about the future of head coach Rodney Terry began flying moments after their loss to Xavier in the First Four round of the NCAA Tournament.

Texas was one of the ‘Last Four In’ for March Madness inclusion and had to earn their right to make the field of 64 by winning a play-in game in Dayton on Wednesday night.

Unfortunately for fans of the Longhorns, Texas’ 13-point lead evaporated as the Xavier Musketeers mounted a massive comeback to advance to the next round – where they will take on six-seeded Illinois.

Not even five minutes after the game ended, college basketball insider Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68 reported that the school ‘is likely to make a move on Terry after two straight years of barely making the NCAA tourney and getting bounced in the First Four this year.’

Terry had long been rumored to be on the hot seat at Texas – a school in which he had only been at the helm for three seasons.

He took over in the middle of the 2022-23 season after the sudden firing of head coach Chris Beard due to a third-degree felony charge of assault against a family member for strangulation.

Beard’s wife, Randi Trew, told police that the coach ‘choked me, bit me, bruises all over my leg, throwing me around, and going nuts.’

The school suspended Beard without pay and then fired him in January of 2023.

Trew later said that Beard acted in self-defense and did not wish to prosecute him. The charges against Beard were dropped and he currently coaches at the University of Mississippi – which is a six-seed in this year’s NCAA Tournament.

Terry took over from Beard and helped guide the Longhorns to the Elite Eight in 2023 – where the fell to Miami.

Last season, his first full season in charge, Terry led the Longhorns to a 21-13 overall record and another NCAA Tournament appearance as a seven-seed. After knocking off Colorado State in their opening game, they fell to eventual Elite Eight team Tennessee.

This season, Terry’s team struggled in the dominant SEC – by far the best college basketball conference in the nation. After going 11-2 in their non-conference schedule, they finished the regular season at 17-14.

They then made it to the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament, where they lost to Tennessee.
