Margot Robbie shares her approval of Lady Gaga signing on to play Harley Quinn in Joker sequel: ‘I think she’ll do something incredible with it’
Margot Robbie shared her approval of Lady Gaga’s casting as Harley Quinn for Joker: Folie a Deux during an interview with MTV News that was shared on Thursday.
The 32-year-old actress expressed that she was excited to see the 36-year-old hitmaker take up the mantle of the supervillain in the upcoming DC Comics movie during the sit-down.
The Academy Award–nominated actress previously portrayed the character in both Suicide Squad movies, as well as the spinoff Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn).

Robbie began by remarking that she was highly supportive of Lady Gaga’s casting as she wanted to see another actress’ interpretation of Harley Quinn.
‘It makes me so happy because I said from the very beginning that all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters the way… like Macbeth or Batman always gets passed from great actor to great actor,’ she stated.
The performer then expressed that she was grateful to have been given the role of a historical figure, who had been portrayed by other actresses in the past, in her much-celebrated movie Mary Queen of Scots.
She stated: ‘I feel like, in not so many cases, are there female characters — Queen Elizabeth I, but beyond that, which I got to have a crack out as well, which I was honored to do. I was like, “Wow! Cate Blanchett did Queen Elizabeth I. Now I get to.”‘

Robbie concluded by saying that she was satisfied with what she had achieved with the supervillain and was enthusiastic about seeing Lady Gaga’s interpretation of Harley Quinn.
‘It’s such an honor to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get to have a go at playing. And I think she’ll do something incredible with it,’ she said.
The actress’ first appearance as Harley Quinn was in 2016’s Suicide Squad, and she received much praise for her interpretation of the character.
She reprised her role in 2020’s Birds of Prey, as well as The Suicide Squad, which premiered the following year.

The original Joker feature was released in 2019 and was met with much critical praise.
Joaquin Phoenix, 47, received the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of the supervillain, who was previously played by performers such as Heath Ledger, who won the same award for his take on the character, and Jack Nicholson.
Development on a follow-up to the much-lauded feature was announced last year, with both the actor and the original film’s director, Todd Phillips, set to return.

It was reported this past June that Lady Gaga was in talks to join the cast of the film, which is also being planned as a musical.
The singer confirmed that she would appear in the feature in August, and both Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener subsequently signed on to the project’s cast.
Joker: Folie A Deux is currently scheduled to be released on October 4, 2024.
