Mariah Carey will be back in New York’s Times Square for New Year’s Eve – but this time as an Airbnb host.

The singer, who has performed in Times Square in previous years on December 31, will be personally greeting (virtually) lucky guests who will be calling the world-famous spot home for a night in a transparent dome.

This year the Times Square celebrations are being pared down due to Covid-19. There will be a performance by Gloria Gaynor and TV personality Jonathan Bennett will be there to host the proceedings, but due to Covid-19 there won’t be a public audience.

However, Airbnb has set up a groovy geodesic dome, complete with a huge bed, on the lofty terrace of stock market index Nasdaq. Here, two lucky guests will be able to ring in the New Year while taking in panoramic views of the New Year’s Eve Ball and the confetti celebrations, having chatted earlier with host Mariah.

But that’s far from all.

The Airbnb guests will have access to an indoor lounge that’s adorned with local art by Jason Douglas Griffin. There they can enjoy a dinner prepared by a private chef and watch the celebrations erupting around the world.

And if sleeping outside isn’t enticing, there’s a comfy double bed inside to snuggle up in.

Extras also include $5,000 of shopping credit to use along NYC’s famous 5th Avenue or local Times Square shops before the stay, a trunk full of sparkly New Year’s Eve hats, 2021 glasses and horns for the countdown to midnight and a sparkly piece of crystal featuring this year’s Waterford Crystal Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball design as a memento to take home.

Airbnb said: ‘With Times Square celebrations going virtual this year, guests will have a truly unique experience during the traditional confetti celebrations, right below the Ball.

‘Life in New York City in 2020 was defined by the resiliency and sacrifices made by frontline workers – and people across the globe were inspired by the bravery and contributions of these everyday heroes.

‘To honor those who have given everything to protect New Yorkers during the Covid-19 crisis, Airbnb will make a contribution to an organization serving New York City frontline workers and their families.’

Any New York City resident who wants to have an evening to remember can request to book this one-night stay beginning on Monday, December 21, at 9am EST on airbnb.com/happyholidays.
