Married financial consultant sent a female colleague a sex toy and kept an obsessive diary of her

Married financial consultant, 53, is given a restraining order after sending a female colleague a sex toy and keeping an obsessive diary that tracked her clothes, movements and the times she looked at him

  • Andrew Browning stalked and kept a daily log of colleague Colette Surrage, 50
  • The pair worked together in Andover, Hampshire as the ‘infatuation’ escalated
  • Browning sent Ms Surrage, who takes medication for anxiety, a sex toy by post
  • He was given a suspended prison sentence and a five-year restraining order

A married financial consultant sent a female colleague a sex toy and kept a diary of her every look, movement, and wardrobe change, a court has heard.

Andrew Browning, 53, loitered around Colette Surrage’s desk, followed her, and watched her go into and out of the office toilets through a window.

He became infatuated with the 50-year-old over a seven-month period while the pair worked together at Huntswood in Andover, Hampshire.

Browning used his work laptop to keep a daily note of when Ms Surrage came and went, with whom she spoke, and how she looked, the court was told.

He followed his victim to her car, and then ducked when he was spotted. His bosses had to intervene when Browning’s diary was discovered.

Browning’s diary entries included minute details, including when Ms Surrage came and went, with whom she spoke, and when she looked at him.

He also noted her different hairstyles and change of wardrobe every day.

Browning’s ‘obsessive and highly disturbing’ behaviour escalated after he visited her home in a nearby village, where she lives with her daughter.

He lurked outside Ms Surrage’s home during work hours when he knew she was at home, and had a sex toy delivered to her there, the court heard.

Ms Surrage was left ‘physically sick’ by his behaviour, and began taking medication for her anxiety as she began to fear for her daughter’s safety.

She revealed in a victim impact statement: ‘I was constantly looking behind me. The anxiety made me physically sick. I’ve had sleepless nights.

‘Seeing him watching me from the window was very creepy and so uncomfortable.’

Her statement continued:  ‘Although there was no physical assault, the psychological impact will last longer than any cuts and bruises.’

Browning, of Kingsclere near Newbury in Berkshire, pleaded guilty to a single charge of stalking involving serious alarm or distress.

He was given a 26-week prison sentence, suspended for 24 months and a five-year restraining order preventing him from contacting Ms Surrage.

Browning is also forbidden from going into her village.

Marcus Sears, defending, told Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court that the package containing the sex toy was a ‘misplaced joke as part of workplace banter’.

He added:  ‘It was an infatuation with someone he worked with.

‘But there is a lack of sinister motivation in this case. It’s not as if this is a relationship of an affair. It was a strange extension of a friendship.’
