Married man ‘murdered pregnant mistress after she refused to get an abortion’

A Florida husband accused of killing his eight-months pregnant mistress was reportedly angry that he gave her money for an abortion but she never got one.

Jose Soto-Escalera was arrested on Friday for two counts of first-degree murder after the body of pregnant 23-year-old Tania Wise was found along the side of a desolate stretch of road in St Lucie County last month.

Soto-Escalera, who is married to another woman, had been romantically involved with Wise and was the father to her unborn baby, which she planned to name Josiah. Police said Wise was one week away from giving birth when she was murdered.

According to an arrest affidavit released on Monday, Soto-Escalera wanted Wise to get an abortion and reportedly became angry when she didn’t.

Soto-Escalera said he gave Wise $500 to terminate the pregnancy and she gave the money to another man she was seeing, the New York Post reports.

‘Wise did not get an abortion and Escalera was mad because Wise “played him”,’ the affidavit stated.

Police said Soto-Escalera initially denied he was sexually involved with Wise but DNA proved he was the father of the unborn baby.

Wise, who was pregnant with what would have been her second child, was found dead on August 24, one day after she told a friend she was going to meet Soto-Escalera.

Sheriff Ken J Mascara said Friday that multiple eyewitnesses had seen Soto-Escalera’s truck in the area where Wise’s body was discovered.

Others reported seeing his truck near her residence on the night she went missing.

According to the affidavit, cellular data shows that Soto-Escalera allegedly called his wife around 10pm from a location near the crime scene.

Investigators said they don’t believe she knew about the alleged affair.

‘We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to Tania’s family and know that what took place today will begin to bring them closure in this horrible and tragic event,’ Sheriff Mascara said.

Soto-Escalera was arrested while driving his wife’s car and had a handgun in his possession.

He was taken to St. Lucie County Jail where he has remained over the weekend.

Wise had another son named Jamar from a previous relationship. Soto-Escalera has four children. Police said Wise had been scheduled to have a C-section just one week after the day she was murdered.
