A regional city was very excited about its history-making moment this week – but not everyone has shared the city’s enthusiasm.
Maryborough in Queensland’s Fraser Coast region has been mocked online since the unveiling of its first ever roundabout, which was proudly revealed on Tuesday.
‘It’s 113 years since we have ever had a roundabout and I think it’s really exciting,’ Fraser Coast Councillor Daniel Sanderson spruiked in the video.
‘It’s a great way to keep things moving and quickly. We’ll keep an eye on it as I think, as a council, we can introduce more in the city as it progresses in the future.’

But the city has been mocked online since celebrating the news
It’s the first roundabout since Maryborough became a city in 1905.
While some locals welcomed the new addition, others made fun of the city’s historic celebration.
‘So glad Maryborough has decided to join the 21st century,’ one man commented on the council’s Facebook page.
Another added: ‘It will take another 100 years for them to work out how to use it!’
The mocking comments got worse after the news of the city’s first roundabout spread to 7 News Brisbane’s bulletin on Friday, where it sparked 1400 comments on Facebook.

Many people made fun of the city’s historic celebration on social media
‘Maryborough is really coming up in the world,’ one woman commented.
One man added: ‘Stay clear of this…. will cause more crashes than a demolition derby.’
Others questioned whether it was newsworthy.
‘Can’t believe this made the news,’ one man commented.
Another added: ‘What a time to be alive.’
Located 255 kilometres of north of Brisbane, Maryborough has a population of almost 28,000.

Other locals saw the funny side
And it’s not the only roundabout for the region.
‘We’re referring to the inner city street plan of Maryborough, which of course is part of the area first founded way back in 1847,’ Fraser Coast Regional Council later clarified in its Facebook post.
‘We’re not trying to overshadow our original roundabout in Tinana. It’s long been one of our favourite parts of the city! But everyone likes to show off their new baby when it arrives … right?’
