Massive 766kg MDMA haul worth more than $90 million is seized

Massive 766kg haul of the ‘highest ever purity’ MDMA worth $90million is seized by police

  • The multi-million dollar haul is the highest purity ever recorded in Queensland
  • Police said the powder would have been diluted and made in to millions of pills
  • According to police, organised crime syndicates are placing young lives at risk

Police have seized more than 766kg of ‘pure’ MDMA powder with a potential street value of almost $90 million.

The haul is the highest purity ever recorded in Queensland.

Police believe the powder was destined for production into pill and capsule form to be sold across Australia.

‘We believe the drug would have been diluted with other agents and had the potential to make between six and 12 million capsules,’ Detective Superintendent Jon Wacker of the State Crime Command’s Drug and Serious Crime Group said.

Six people, including four British men and two Australians, were arrested in Australia and New Zealand as part of an alleged UK-based crime syndicate responsible importing the drugs.

‘This has a conservative value of $90million,’ Mr Wacker said.

‘Organised crime syndicates are making significant profit at the expense of our Australian community but more importantly they are placing our young people’s health at risk.

‘This operation has been focused on targeting and dismantling this organised syndicate and is a culmination of the cooperative efforts of the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission, New South Wales Police Force, Australian Federal Police, New Zealand Police National Organised Crime Group, Australian Border Force, the Department of Home Affairs Intelligence Division and the UK National Crime Agency.’

An Australian man, 26, and woman, 51, and two British men aged 40 and 51  were arrested after Wednesday’s haul.

Last week, another two British men aged 49 and 60 were arrested in New Zealand after police seized 200kg of methamphetamine.
