Massive fire tears through a primary school site after substation bursts into flames and hundreds are left without power

A huge fire is burning through a primary school’s grounds in front of horrified residents who have been left without power.

New City Primary School in Plaistow, East London, is the site of a massive blaze, which one witness said is ‘getting worse’.

Firefighters are still battling the extinguish it as witnesses line the roads that surround the site.

Giles Jackson, 55, told Mirror Online that a substation in the playground was the origin of the inferno.

He’d been at a meeting at the site just hours before it took hold. Mr Jackson left the building at 7.15pm and returned later to find firefighters furiously spraying the burning school.

Though emergency workers quelled the flames on the building, the fire is still tearing through the surrounding area. 

And up to four streets have lost power, with Mr Giles saying that the substation provided electricity to surrounding roads. 

Joshua Joseph, 16, said that people watched in horror as the fire grew larger while firefighters battled on.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said four fire engines were called at 10.04pm and were still battling the blaze past midnight. 

No injuries have been reported and the school is currently in its summer holiday period.     

One witness on Twitter said: ‘Turns out there’s a massive fire at New City Primary School with the electrical box. The fire is getting worse. Everyone is out in the streets shocked.’

Another said: ‘Fire at New City Road Primary School in East London. The power has been cut off in the entire E13 post code during one of the hottest day of the year.’

One social media user tweeted: ‘Huge fire at New City Primary School – on the corner of our new house! Turns out to the electrical substation that’s gone up spectacularly due to heatwave. No power for a few days at least according to the word.’
