‘What are you doing?’ MasterChef judges are left shocked after medical student makes major error during tense challenge
Tensions were high during Sunday night’s episode of MasterChef Australia.
The show’s judges Melissa Leong, Jock Zonfrillo and Andy Allen were left shocked after Eric Mao made a major error during an elimination challenge.
While attempting to create a carbonara, the medical student, 21, couldn’t emulsify and create the sauce because his pan was too hot.

‘I’ve just had mini disaster in the kitchen and now I’m losing a lot of confidence,’ Eric said to the camera after setting fire to a tray.
‘Everything is disorganised, everything is frantic. It’s not going well at all.’
‘I’ve got to get my pasta cooked and get onto actually making the carbonara itself. Whatever happens, I cannot waste time in making another big mistake.’

Eric then explained: ‘The art of making a beautiful carbonara lies in the emulsification step. Mixing the sauce and the pasta water.’
He then held his cooked pasta using a pair of tongs and threw it into a pan.
‘What are you doing, Eric?’ a stunned Melissa said.

‘The pan is far too hot,’ Eric said.
‘I cannot emulsify and create a beautiful and luscious sauce in a pan that is that hot but I don’t have much of a choice,’ he admitted.
Despite Eric’s setback, Wynona was sent packing during the elimination episode.
