The reception featured fairy lights draped from the ceiling over long white tables and white flowers along the centre.

Emily, who plays as a forward for Aston Villa in England, and Temica dated for eight years before tying the knot.

When the Matildas were set to go into camp ahead of two friendlies against Canada during August and September last year, Emily flew in from the UK one day early so she could propose to Temica.

Emily was named in the Matildas’ initial World Cup squad but suffered an ankle injury in March and and failed to recover in time.

She has dominated the best competitions around the world in the USA, Australia, Sweden, Germany, Canada, Norway and Japan.

She recently revealed that there were many ‘dark times’ in her personal life, because, given her family upbringing, she didn’t feel comfortable coming out of the closet.

‘My mum being Croatian … being gay was frowned upon, so I never saw how I was going to come out and tell my family,’ she said on the Disney+ documentary, Matildas: The World At Our Feet.

‘So I tried everything to live this lie for years. There was a lot of dark times.’

She said it was the love from Temica that help her be comfortable enough to live the life she needed too.

Emily added that it wasn’t fair for her to ask her to keep their relationship hidden for so long – but remains grateful she did stick around despite that.

‘It was really Temica who helped me break down finally being ok being in a same-sex relationship,’ she said.

‘It wasn’t fair for her, for how many years, that I wasn’t open about our relationship – and she’s always stood by me.’
