But it appears that Matty ‘J’ Johnson is receiving some direction, sporting an earpiece during Wednesday night’s episode of The Bachelor.
Matty could be clearly seen wearing the aid as he entered the rose ceremony and shook host Osher Gunsberg’s hand.

After walking into the rose ceremony with an earpiece visible in his left ear, Matty was then shot for the rest of the segment from his right side, hiding the sound aid from view.
A Network Ten spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia the earpiece was worn as Matty ‘occasionally required to be connected to the director if there are technical difficulties with cameras, audio and lighting’.
Earlier this season Matty made an impassioned speech to contestants during a rose ceremony, after Sian Kelly questioned his motives for appearing on the show.

‘I just want to say to you ladies that I’m not some puppet that’s just being told what to do,’ he said.
‘When I pick someone for a single date, that’s because I picked them myself. I decide who goes on those dates.’
He later added: ‘When you receive a rose in the rose ceremony, that’s because it’s entirely my decision. There is absolutely no one who’s telling me what to do when people need to leave.

Network 10 said the earpiece was only used during rose ceremonies and never when Matty was talking to contestants one-on-one.
‘Once they get the all clear, they can continue with the Rose Ceremony proceedings,’ they continued.
‘The Bachelor or Bachelorette never wears an earpiece during a cocktail party or on dates.’

However an anonymous onetime contestant claimed in 2015 that an earpiece was worn so the Bachelor could be told whose name to be called next.
‘You can hear the Bachelor’s earpiece,’ the former contestant told the Courier Mail.
‘Literally, you can hear them say, for example, “Sally, in 3, 2, 1,” and then he says ”Sally”. I was standing there, trying not to laugh, looking around at all the girls thinking, ”Can you not hear this?”’
