McDonald’s April Fools Day prank backfires as customers demand the ‘McFry’ become a permanent item

McDonald’s has faced a wave of backlash over an April Fools Day prank as angry customers demand the ‘joke’ burger be made a permanent item. 

Hundreds of Aussies have begged the fast food chain to make the ‘McFry’ available all year round after the menu item was launched as an April Fools joke on social media. 

The fake addition to the menu offered fans a quarter pounder stuffed with chips. 

‘The ultimate Mac-hack now comes made to order, as we take the classic Quarter Pounder and stack it with Australia’s fave fries,’ the announcement read. 

‘No mess. No fuss. No worries. We’ve made it so you don’t have to! Get your hands on the McFry today. Available until yesterday.’

While some Maccas enthusiasts enjoyed the joke, others were bitterly disappointed.

‘This is not funny that it’s a prank. I’d totally buy a Mcfry!’ one woman wrote. 

‘I was so excited until I read the last part ‘available until yesterday’. Maybe McDonald’s should actually release burgers like this,’ a second agreed. 

‘April Fools aside, this actually sounds like friggen awesome burger, I might actually buy Maccas for once,’ a third commented. 

‘This better not be April fools, I hate having to pack the fries in myself,’ another said.

In a reply to a comment, a McDonald’s spokesperson joked customers could buy a ‘McFry DIY kit’ by simply purchasing a quarter pounder meal. 

Aussies would then have to load the fries into the burger themselves.

The newly-created offering was supposed to be filled with plenty of pickles, lined between layers of melted cheese, and packed into a sesame seed bun.

Alongside a short video showcasing the burger, the fast food chain added a caption described the ingredients of the pickle-filled concoction.

‘Pickle lovers, it’s the news you’ve all been waiting for,’ it read.

‘We’re super stoked to announce the launch of our brand new McPickle Burger. It’s time to tuck into juicy, flavoursome pickles layered between melted cheese, ketchup sauce and toasted sesame seed buns.

‘It’s sure to be a treat for all your senses.’

While some social media users cottoned onto the April Fool’s Day prank straight away, others were outraged the burger wasn’t actually available to buy.

‘If only it wasn’t April Fools,’ one person wrote.

‘Don’t play with me McDonalds… make this happen,’ a second implored.

‘Omfg if this is April Fools’ joke [I’m going to] be mad,’ another added.
