Paul’s homemade Sweet and Sour sauce

  • 1/2 cup apricot jam (St Dalfour)
  • 2 tablespoons liquid glucose (corn-based)
  • 5 teaspoons rice wine vinegar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cornflour
  • 1/2 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon French’s yellow mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons water

Combine all ingredients except the water in a food processor or a blender and puree until the mixture is smooth.

Pour the mixture into a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the water, stir, and bring mixture to a boil. Allow it to boil for five minutes, stirring often.

When the sauce has thickened, remove it from the heat and let it cool.

He made the sauce using apricot jam, glucose, rice wine vinegar, cornflour, soy sauce, mustard, garlic powder and a pinch of salt.

Combining all the ingredients in a food processor, he blended everything together until the mixture turned into a puree.

Next, he pour the mixture into a saucepan over medium heat, before adding water. He brought the mixture to boil, stirring often until the sauce thickens.

‘Something was missing and I then, I had a eureka moment… A splash of pickle juice,’ he said.

‘At this point I added approximately one to two table spoons of dill pickle juice (Always Fresh Dill Pickles) which to me, made it taste far more maccas-like [sic].’

He rated his creation on presentation and taste nine out of 10.

Another foodie Leanne also shared her version of the recipe after attempting to create the iconic condiment in her kitchen.

‘I made some sweet and sour sauce to go with our chips,’ she said.

‘I used corn syrup, apricot jam, garlic powder, salt, mustard, apple vinegar, corn flour and soy and blended together before putting on the hob with some water and cooking slowly until it thickened.’

She gave her sauce an eight out of 10 for taste and looks.

The latest recipes comes as thousands of Australians work together to experiment their own take of the chain’s mouthwatering recipes at home.

So far, many claim to have made almost identical ‘dupes’ to top selling items including the chain’s famed chicken nuggets, Big Mac sauce, McMuffins, McFlurry flavours and chicken burgers.

Previously speaking to Daily Mail Australia, Joel said he feels as though people could really benefit from the Facebook page.

‘You know, I’m a big fan of McDonald’s and most fast food outlets actually. I like the consistency though which is where McDonald’s would sometimes let me down,’ he said.

‘No cheese, not sauced well enough, forgot the dipping sauce and you don’t notice until you’re home with the food. I could go on. I figured if I could make it myself I could perfect it.’

The ‘rules’ of the group are quite simple and require members to share only food ideas from the McDonald’s menu – current or previous – and share ‘bite photos’ of their creations.

‘Posts that do not contain cooks must show a basic constructive discussion to a potential cook. If you’re not able to make the meal yourself then call a “CHALLENGE”,’ the rules read.

‘Must post ingredients & rating /10, yes you can replicate items on the drinks and dessert menu, vegetarian/vegan substitutes are acceptable, but a level of aesthetic replication must be upheld.’
