Meg Ryan is set to direct Netflix’s feature adaptation of A Lady’s Guide to Selling Out

Meg Ryan has been tapped to direct Netflix’s movie adaptation of Sally Franson’s 2018 novel A Lady’s Guide to Selling Out.

According to a report from Deadline, the 60-year-old actress will be helming her second feature following her directorial debut with the 2015 drama Ithaca.

Juilliard playwright Jenny Rachel Weiner will serve as screenwriter for the adaptation which will be produced by by Gary Foster and Russ Krasnoff from Krasnoff/Foster Entertainment and Anonymous Content’s  Kim Hodgert.

Aevitas Creative Management is executive producing the film.

According to a review from Entertainment Weekly, the novel ‘intermixes elements of The Bold Type, Mad Men, and The Devil Wears Prada.’ 

The book description for A Lady’s Guide to Selling Out reads: ‘Casey Pendergast is losing her way. Once a book-loving English major, Casey lands a job at a top ad agency that highly values her ability to tell a good story. Her best friend thinks she’s a sellout, but Casey tells herself that she’s just paying the bills—and she can’t help that she has champagne taste.

‘When her hard-to-please boss assigns her to a top-secret campaign that pairs literary authors with corporations hungry for upmarket cachet, Casey is both excited and skeptical.

Ithaca marked the onscreen reunion between Ryan and Tom Hanks, whom she starred with in Joe Versus the Volcano, Sleepless In Seattle, and You’ve Got Mail.

In 2015 interview with IndieWire, the three-time Golden Globe nominee said she was inspired to adapt William Saroyan’s 1943 novel The Human Comedy following her 2001 divorce from Dennis Quaid.

‘I found the book when I got divorced, and my son [Jack] was eight years old,’ she told the media outlet.

‘And I was like lost, I thought it was going to be so hard. Who is [Jack] going to look to? How is he going to be a man? When I read it, I found that there were so many people in Homer’s community who are invested in his integrity. My first in to the material was as a mom.’ 

Ryan, who is also mom to daughter Daisy, 18,  went on to cast Jack, 29, in the film.  He played WWII soldier Marcus Macauley while she took on the role of his widowed mother.

Ryan’s former boyfriend John Mellencamp, with whom she split in 2014 after four years together, scored the movie.  

The In the Cut star shared her thoughts on stepping into the director’s chair, saying, ‘I always thought about directing but I’m so glad I didn’t do it until now. It takes so much of you.’

‘I have a lot of slow pitches, but I also have a couple fastballs and those are that I understand actors and I understand frames.’
