  • Ocasio-Cortez’s invitation followed the U.S. women’s team’s 2-1 victory over French in the quarterfinals of the Women’s World Cup

Megan Rapinoe is set to tour the House of Representatives after accepting an invitation from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY.)

The invitation for Rapinoe and her teammates was made very informally via Twitter.

‘It may not be the White House, but we’d be happy to welcome @mPinoe & the entire #USWMNT for a tour of the House of Representatives anytime they’d like,’ Ocasio-Cortez tweeted.

‘Consider it done,’ Rapinoe responded enthusiastically, complete with a party-face emoji.

Ocasio-Cortez’s invitation followed the U.S. women’s team’s 2-1 victory over French in the quarterfinals of the Women’s World Cup. Rapinoe scored both goals in that match.

The team will now face England in the semifinals. 

The invitation and acceptance comes just the week after Rapinoe said she wouldn’t accept a team invitation to the White House.

Rapinoe rejected the idea of a White House visit in an interview with Eight By Eight.

‘I’m not going to the f****** White House,’ she stated twice, before adding: ‘We’re not going to be invited.’  

In response to her comments about rejecting a future White House invitation, President Trump tweeted that leagues and teams ‘love’ visiting.

He wrote: ‘Megan should never disrespect our Country, the White House, or our Flag, especially since so much has been done for her & the team.

‘Be proud of the Flag that you wear. The USA is doing GREAT!’

He added that ‘win or lose’ he would now be inviting the team anyway. 

‘I am a big fan of the American Team, and Women’s Soccer, but Megan should WIN first before she TALKS! Finish the job!’ 

Rapinoe, who came out as gay in 2012, told NBC Sports: ‘Being a gay American, I know what it means to look at the flag and not have it protect all of your liberties.’

She has refused to sing the national anthem and doesn’t put her hand over her heart at the World Cup games.  

In response to the comments, Rapinoe said she she stood by what she had said about the turning down a White House visit ‘with exception of the expletive.’

‘My mom will be very upset about that,’ she added.
