‘We’re crazy, that’s what makes us special… we just have no quit in us’: Megan Rapinoe hails United States after claiming back-to-back World Cups with victory over Holland

Megan Rapinoe hailed the United States’ team spirit after they claimed back-to-back World Cups on Sunday.

The Americans beat Holland 2-0 in the eagerly-anticipated final in Lyon, with Rapinoe scoring from the penalty spot before Rose Lavelle wrapped up the victory with a fine solo effort.

Victory ensured the US have now won four World Cups in their history and Rapinoe – the Golden Ball and Boot winner in France – claimed her country’s ‘crazy’ side sets them apart from the world.

Moments after the final whistle, Rapinoe said: ‘It’s unbelievable. Just to know all of the people in our group that put in so much work, obviously the players.

‘We have all our friends and family here. It’s like history I don’t know how to feel right now. It is ridiculous.

‘We’re crazy that’s what makes us special. We just have no quit in us. We are so tight. We will do anything to win.’

English-born US head coach Jill Ellis, who has become the first manager to win consecutive Women’s World Cups having taken over in 2014, was full of praise for her side on Sunday in Lyon.

The US had to navigate a difficult path to the final, beating Spain, hosts France, England and Holland to creating more history.

‘This is an amazing group of players but even better group of people’, Ellis added.

‘Just fantastic resiliency, just chemistry. They put their heart and soul into this journey and I cannot thank them enough. It’s been fantastic.

‘I just said to them they were unbelievable. Congratulations. They made history. Enjoy it. This is unbelievable.’

Meanwhile, former England international and Arsenal star Alex Scott claimed their winning mentality is why they have yet again conquered the world.

The World Cup pundit told BBC: ‘The USA do not apologise for wanting to be the best and they have that winning mentality that everyone else needs to get. They show up on the biggest occasions.’
