Megaphone-wielding vegan mother holds anti-meat Easter protest in Sainsbury’s

Megaphone-wielding vegan mother holds anti-meat Easter protest in Sainsbury’s as elderly female shopper tells her: ‘Go home and look after your children’

  • Claire Folan, 34, protested with five others at a Sainsbury’s in Canterbury
  • The veterinary nurse said: ‘We will keep showing up in places that sell violence’
  • Protest lasted for about 20 minutes before the police came and dispersed them
  • An elderly woman who seemed confused by the protest continued to tell Ms Folan to ‘go home and look after your children’

A vegan mother-of-two took to the aisles of her local Sainsbury’s yesterday to protest the selling of meat while others held up laptops playing videos of animals being slaughtered.

Speaking into a megaphone, Claire Folan, 34, told shoppers at a Canterbury Sainsbury’s: ‘We are animal rights activists and we will keep on showing up in places that sell violence’.

She was joined by five other protesters who handed out leaflets and played videos of animals being killed.

A vegan mother-of-two, Claire Folan, 34, took to the aisle of a Sainsbury’s in Canterbury to voice her protests against the meat industry

An elderly woman continued to walk up and down the aisle where the activists were standing and repeatedly told Ms Folan to ‘go home and look after your children’.

The group began their protest at about 1.30pm but dispersed 20 minutes later when the police showed up.

Ms Folan told Kent Live: ‘It was an Easter protest. All of our celebrations – birthdays, Easter, Christmas – always have dead animal bodies at the centre and that was the catalyst to disrupt this place that sells that violence which was Sainsbury’s’.

Ms Folan said: 'I have two 18-month children. If they were lambs they would already have been killed'

During the protest Ms Folan can be heard saying: ‘I am a mother.

‘I have two 18-month children. If they were born lambs they would already have been killed.’

Ms Folan, a veterinary nurse, understands why some people aren’t ready to make the change because she only turned vegan in 2017 when she became a mother.

She said: ‘I wasn’t always vegan so I completely understand that this might not be at the forefront of everybody’s mind.

‘But after seeing actions like this, seeing the footage of what happens on farms and doing my own research, I went vegan.’

Ms Folan has previously organised a protest against dairy at a Morrisons in Margate.
