A teenage Meghan Markle sings her heart out to Santa Baby in newly-uncovered footage from her High School festive show as the pregnant Duchess prepares to spend her second Christmas with the royals

  • Newly-found footage shows Meghan, 17, on stage at high school Christmas show
  • Already a seasoned performer, the future duchess takes to her role with gusto
  • At the time – December 1998 – Meghan was in her senior year before university

In three days’ time she will settle down around the tree at Sandringham with the rest of the Royal Family on Christmas Eve.

But 30 years ago the then-Meghan Markle was just another pretty teenager in a festive hat singing her heart out to the tongue-in-cheek song Santa Baby.

Newly-unearthed footage of the 17-year-old future duchess sees Meghan hamming it up on stage at the December 1998 Immaculate Heart High School Christmas show in Los Angeles.

Already a seasoned performer, she takes to her role with gusto, lip-syncing the words as she comically asks Father Christmas for a yacht, a convertible and a ring

Already a seasoned performer, she takes to her role with gusto, lip-syncing the words as she comically asks Father Christmas for a yacht, a convertible and a ring.

Dressed in a sleeveless all-black outfit, she put on a scene-stealing performance with the help of fellow pupil Natalie Fryman, who, like Meghan, also became an actress, at what was known as the Christmas Liturgy Show.

Before the performance, Meghan and her classmates can be seen holding candles as Silent Night plays in the background. She can then be seen larking around and hugging her friends.

At the time Meghan was in her senior year at High School before heading off to university.

‘The performance went down really well. The lyrics are quite amusing to think about now.’

Santa Baby became a huge hit when it was first recorded by Eartha Kitt in 1953 and its cheeky lyrics, urging ‘Santa Cutie’ to hurry down the chimney with an embarrassment of riches, has been covered by everyone from Madonna to Kylie Minogue.

Meghan, 37, will for the second year running be enjoying Christmas with the Queen at Sandringham after a whirlwind year which saw her get married to sixth in line to the throne Prince Harry and fall pregnant with their first child, which is due in the spring.

They are due to arrive at the estate on Christmas Eve when, according to a German tradition introduced by Prince Albert, the Royal Family exchange gifts, which are then laid out on tables to be opened on Christmas Day.

The youngest members of the family are also allowed to finish decorating the Queen’s tree, before the adults enjoy a black-tie dinner.

All eyes will be on Meghan and Harry on Christmas Day as they walk to church with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge after recent reports concerning their difficult relationship.

But contrary to reports, Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, has not be invited to join them. Instead the duchess will spend time with her mother privately over the festive season.
