During a conversation with Entertainment Tonight via video call on Saturday, Daniel Martin, from New York, spoke to host Melicia Johnson about his royal friend and client, the Duchess of Sussex, 38, and how she’s changed the beauty industry for the better.

Speaking of how the former Suits actress changed his world and also the beauty industry, Daniel, who was responsible for Meghan’s wedding day makeup, explained: ‘If anything it gave my name and my work a larger platform. I feel like what she represents is now.’

‘She is contemporary and she resonates on so many levels because here is someone we all know, we all have a friend who looks like her, who is marrying into this establishment which was very one-way, one perspective.’

He continued: ‘I feel like globally she resonates on so many levels not only because of how she looks but who she is.’

The renowned makeup artist went on to say that he feels a certain ‘responsibility’ to associate himself with her.

‘I’m very fortunate that we’re authentic friends so I feel like I have to do and be as good because we’re all in this together,’ he said. ‘She gave me this incredible gift and now it’s my responsibility to share that.’

He was also joined by supermodel Veronica Webb – and the pair spoke about Black representation in the fashion and beauty industry and how it needs to evolve in today’s world.

During the chat, presenter Melicia referred to an interview she watched where Daniel mentioned a mother had seen how he had done the royal’s make up to show her natural beauty as a woman of color.

She went on to say how it had really inspired that mother’s daughter and that she could accept herself because she realized she didn’t need to do so much to be beautiful.

‘It’s just interesting because what I did with her on her wedding day was something I’ve always done throughout the years with my clients, so just to understand that perspective of how it made other people feel,’ responded the beauty pro.

‘My goal that day was just to make sure my friend felt good on her wedding day. It wasn’t about the spectacle of who she was marrying, the wedding. I just wanted her to feel as beautiful as she did like any bride on her wedding day.’

He added: ‘To read those documents that enabled young girls to really understand the power of makeup of how it made them feel was really interesting because I had never thought of it like that.’

Daniel is believed to have known Meghan for over a decade, having met her while the former actress worked on Suits.

He has remained in contact with the Duchess throughout her life in the royal family and has often seen her over the last year.

Daniel was by Meghan’s side on her wedding day as he perfected her makeup and attended her famous baby shower in New York last February alongside celebrities like Gayle King and Serena Williams.

He was one of the first to visit the Duke and Duchess of Sussex when they moved into Frogmore Cottage shortly before Archie’s birth.

And the makeup artist sparked rumours he could be one of Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor’s secret godparents when he shared pictures from London in the days after the baby’s christening.

The royal also surprised Daniel in New York for his birthday last September, with the makeup artist revealing the news by sharing a snap on Instagram of a plate of cupcakes.
