Meghan Markle’s One Young World Summit speech labelled a ‘trainwreck’ by young Australian woman

A young Australian woman has labelled Meghan Markle a ‘trainwreck’ after the former actress’s seven-minute gender equality speech.

On Monday the Duchess of Sussex delivered her first in-person address in Britain since quitting as a working royal amid the ‘Megxit’ crisis more than two years ago.

Meghan told the One Young World summit audience at Bridgewater Hall in Manchester that ‘it is very nice to be back in the UK’ before urging young leaders to ‘cement their place in history’ by working to ‘create a better future’.

But Australian social media user ‘gowokegobrokeaus’ criticised the speech and claimed Meghan Markle was ‘not genuine, rehearsed and contrived’ in a TikTok video on Wednesday.

‘Who saw Meghan Markle’s speech?… It was a trainwreck, she has not had a good run lately. All of this publicity she is doing is doing her no favours at all,’ she said.

‘I really want to like her because I like Harry, and he seems like a really nice genuine person.

‘I think the problem with her is that she is so not genuine and everything that comes out of her mouth just seems like it’s so rehearsed and so contrived.’

Gowokegobrokeaus claimed Meghan Markle was trying to portray herself as a modern-day Oprah Winfrey but that she did not have the struggles and back story of the media icon.

In the TikTok Video, which has received over 16,500 views, Gowokegobrokeaus calls Meghan Markle a ‘diva’ and a ‘spoilt brat’ whose private life contradicts the public persona she is trying to forge.

‘She’s trying to be inspiring through her words and her speeches but she doesn’t do anything in her life to really back that up,’ she said.

‘She contradicts all of those kind words that she says in public by being a complete diva and spoilt brat in private.

‘It’s really hard to connect her public persona with her private persona … It’s really hard to feel like we have a connection with her true self or that we know who she really is because everything is behind a facade.’

The video, captioned ‘Meghan is unravelling’, has divided TikTok users with some agreeing with the young woman’s claims.

‘I don’t think either of them are nice or genuine. They’re both entitled brats who want a pat on the back for being rich and having opinions,’ one user wrote.

‘Her speeches/interviews are all the same words… just in a different order. It remains THE.SAME. STORY… all about her,’ another user commented.

‘I agree, I want to like her, she’s a strong, independent woman but she lies or twists the truth too often to be genuine,’ a third person chimed.

Other users disagreed and labelled Gowokegobroaus a ‘hater’ who had not done her research.

‘I disagree. Everyone has their own opinions, but to say she doesn’t back that up means you have not done your research,’ one user wrote.

‘In the grand scheme of things how does she affect you? Get a life hater,’ another person commented.

Another comment read: ‘Her speech was amazing and an inspiration… there is NO problem and 100 % genuine… you just don’t like her… just another woman hating on another woman.’

Daily Mirror royal editor Russell Myers said the speech in Manchester, which was billed in advance as being about equality, was a ‘missed opportunity’.

He told ITV’s Lorraine that the talk to 2,000 delegates at the opening ceremony ‘was a bit too much more of a reference about her own personal experiences’.

The former actress told only one anecdote about women during the speech to about 2,000 people and gushed about Prince Harry and the ‘life-changing’ impact of becoming a mother to Archie.

At one point she spoke of her pride at being a ‘mum’ and appeared emotional when the audience applauded. She then spoke of how her life had ‘changed significantly’ – a reference that may have been related to Archie, the Royal Family and Megxit.

Meghan told the audience of mainly young people about how she first became involved in the organisation in 2014: ‘In many ways I was probably like a lot like you, I was young, ambitious’ and declared to those listening that they must ‘seize the moment’ and not be crippled by self-doubt.

She questioned how she became successful, referring to herself as ‘the girl from Suits’ who was eventually ‘invited to pull up a seat at the table’ with powerful leaders, prime minsters, humanitarians and activists. She also spoke about the first time she was asked to be a counsellor and having a ‘pinch me moment’.

‘I was so overwhelmed by this experience, I think, I think I even saved my little paper place-marker with my name on it,’ she said, adding it was ‘Just proof: proof that I was there, proof that I belonged, because the truth was, I wasn’t sure that I belonged.’

Her seven-minute speech was a jibe-free missive which came just days after her controversial interview with The Cut magazine, in which she said it takes ‘a lot of effort’ to forgive and hinted that she can ‘say anything’, in what was seen by some as a thinly-veiled threat to the Royal Family.

In the interview with The Cut magazine, Meghan Markle said that ‘just by existing’ she and Harry were ‘upsetting the dynamic of the hierarchy’ before they stepped down as senior working royals in 2020.

The Duchess of Sussex also claimed she had been compared to South African hero Nelson Mandela – a claim which has seen Meghan labelled as a ‘tosser’.

Meghan Markle said a cast member of the Lion King in 2019 said South Africans had ‘danced in the street’ when she married Prince Harry – just like they did when ‘Mandela was freed from prison’.

The remark prompted Australian Sunrise TV host Natalie Barr to call Megan a ‘tosser’ in an extraordinary on-air rant.

‘I think in Australia we’d say she’s just full of it. She’s a tosser. She’s a total tosser! That’s how we would describe her. I just can’t… the way she speaks,’ she said.

Barr, 54, who is known for her more conservative broadcasting style, was uncharacteristically candid as she told her co-anchor David ‘Kochie’ Koch she ‘couldn’t even stomach getting through the whole article’.
