Meghan Markle’s wedding day something blue in Queen of the World

Royal fans were left ‘in tears’ after the Duchess of Sussex revealed the touching way she paid tribute to her new husband with her ‘something blue’ on their wedding day.

Speaking in a new royal documentary last night, Meghan told how she had worn a blue dress on her first date with Prince Harry and asked for a piece of fabric from the frock to be stitched into her Givenchy wedding gown.

The couple, who tied the knot at Windsor Castle in May, were introduced by a mutual friend in the summer of 2016.

The revelation was hailed as ‘the most romantic thing’ by a Royal Collections curator in the episode – and struck a similar chord with viewers at home.

One delighted fan tweeted: ‘Meghan is so down to earth and sweet and that “something blue” story made me well up I don’t understand people’s hatred towards her #QueenOfTheWorld.’

Others joked that they would start wearing blue on first dates in the hope of recreating the gesture on their own wedding day.

‘Forever wearing blue on every first date I go on now because Meghan sewing a piece of blue fabric from the dress she wore on her first date with Harry inside her wedding dress as her something blue is the most romantic thing ever,’ one posted.

Two-part ITV documentary Queen of the World, which premiered last night, focuses on the important role Her Majesty plays in the Commonwealth.

Meghan reveals how she saw her veil for the first time hours before the royal wedding

The Duchess of Sussex and Givenchy’s Clare Waight Keller came up with the idea to have the national flowers of all 53 Commonwealth nations embroidered into her wedding veil.

‘It was important for me, especially now being a part of the Royal Family, to have all 53 of the Commonwealth countries incorporated,’ she said.

The pair worked on a number of sketches together but Meghan was confident leaving the veil’s final creation to Waight Keller as she trusted the designer ‘implicitly’.

It meant she only saw the stunning creation – which took 500 hours to craft – on the morning of the wedding.

The piece was also a surprise for Prince Harry and other members of the royal family.

She added: ‘I knew that it would be a fun surprise as well for my now husband, who didn’t know, and he was really over the moon to find out that I would make this choice for our day together.’

While the Duchess of Cambridge was largely absent, her sister-in-law the Duchess of Sussex featured in a touching scene that saw her reunited with her wedding dress and veil – which was painstakingly embroidered with flowers of the Commonwealth.

Meghan reflected on the nuptials while admiring the Givenchy gown with Hannah Belcher, a senior exhibitions project co-ordinator at the Royal Collection.

While delicately touching the hem of the dress, Meghan turned to Ms Belcher and said: ‘Somewhere in here – did you see? – there’s a piece of blue fabric that’s stitched inside as my “something blue”. It’s fabric from the dress I wore on our first date.’

The traditional rhyme, ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue,’ is said to tell brides what to wear to bring good luck on their wedding day.

The blue fabric was not the only wedding day surprise Meghan kept from Harry.

She revealed how her royal husband only discovered the flowers of 53 Commonwealth nations were stitched into her veil on the day itself.

She added: ‘I think the other members of the family had a similar reaction and just appreciation for the fact that we understand how important this is for us and the role that we play, and the work that we’re gonna continue to do within the Commonwealth countries.

‘So, yeah, it was good news all around, I think, so I hope people liked it as much as I liked helping to create it.’

The Duchess of Sussex explained that because she trusted Waight Keller so ‘implicitly’, she felt confident enough to leave the finished piece in the designer’s hands after just a couple of meetings.

She only saw the stunning creation – which had taken 500 hours to craft – for the first time just hours before she was set to walk down the aisle.

Explaining the planning process with Waight Keller, Meghan recalled: ‘We had two or three meetings, with sketches, talking about how this could really come to life.

‘We knew we wanted it to be really delicate and then at that point I just said “I trust her implicitly” with what she did, and I didn’t see it really until the morning of. So this is my first time seeing it laid like this!’
