Meghan McCain chat with Trump says he wont criticize dad

Meghan McCain said she had a conversation with the president about her father’s war injuries and said she doesn’t expect he will be deriding Senator John McCain’s service again.

‘He [the president] actually reached out to me and we had a very nice conversation and I feel comfortable going forward if he would say or do anything in the realm of talking about my father’s war injuries in that nature, I don’t think he would go there again,’ the View co-host said during a podcast with Politico’s Women Rule.

‘I don’t think at this point in his administration it would be beneficial to him in any way,’ she added.

In 2015, a then presidential hopeful Trump said of the Arizona senator ‘He’s not a war hero.’

‘He’s a war hero because he was captured,’ Trump said, before remarking: ‘I like people that weren’t captured, OK?’

McCain was a naval aviator during the Vietnam War. He was shot an captured, and spent five years as a prisoner of war. He was tortured during his time and still suffers from his war-time injuries.

‘I wish there would be sort of more respect in general but my father never toes the party line no matter who’s president,’ McCain said. She said however, it is ‘rational’ her father would be a ‘thorn in Trump’s side.’

The senator was hospitalized over the holidays due to side effects of chemotherapy treatments for brain cancer, but she says he is doing really well and cheekily added he still ‘loves being talked about.’

The View co-host also touched on comments made by the president’s daughter Ivanka in the past about how she’s not a ‘political person.’

‘The part that I find confusing about her is that she works in the administration; she has an office in the White House, and she has claimed not to be a political person,’ McCain said.

Meghan McCain added she would like to hear more from Ivanka on other policies she supports, but notes the president's daughter's life must be 'difficult and complicated' right now

She added, ‘You’re an adviser to your father, who also happens to be the president, and you’re not a political person? I don’t like things like that.’

Meghan did not hold back during her podcast chat, and added that she would like to hear more from Ivanka, beyond her fighting for paid family leave and the child tax credit- two topics she frequently champions.

She did however note the tremendous amount of pressure Ivanka is under, noting ‘only imagine how difficult and complicated her life is right now.’

‘I really only try to have compassion for it,’ McCain said.
