Melanie Griffith’s family reunites for Hollywood Legacies

The Hedren-Griffith-Johnsons reunited to discuss their unorthodox family history for THR’s Hollywood Legacies issue with a spread shot by lensman Joe Pugliese.

Melanie Griffith suited up in black to pose beside her mother Tippi Hedren, her ex-husband Don Johnson, and their daughter Dakota Johnson for the mag, which hit newsstands Monday.

The silver-haired matriarch – turning 88 next month – recalled the ‘sheer panic’ she felt after her 23-year-old co-star in The Harrad Experiment started romancing her then 14-year-old child.

‘They were two beautiful, wonderful people, and here, my daughter was showing signs that I had never seen before in her, with an older man, and there was just sheer panic,’ the Golden Globe winner shrugged.

‘How do you handle that? There was a very strong attachment between the two of them.’

By the time the 60-year-old Oscar nominee turned 15, she was sharing a rented Laurel Canyon home with the 68-year-old Golden Globe winner whom she called ‘the most beautiful person I’d ever seen.’

The on/off couple went on to wed twice, in 1976 and 1989, before finally divorcing for good in 1996.

At all of this, 28-year-old Dakota cracked: ‘I keep my therapist on speed dial.’

Both Melanie and Dakota learned big lessons from Tippi (born Nathalie), who refused to fulfill her seven-year contract with her Birds director Alfred Hitchcock after he sexually harassed her.

The Disaster Artist actress remembers ‘not being allowed’ to visit her mother on the Birds set and she received a very creepy present from the British filmmaker – a figurine of Tippi in a ‘coffin.’

‘[Hedren] became an example of what to never let happen in my life,’ Griffith said. ‘Hopefully, I’ve passed that on to Dakota – to be strong in your work and in yourself.’
