The assault comes a week after 18-year-old Hashim Mohamed was killed in a brutal knife attack in St Kilda.

Following the teenager’s death, African leader Hanad Hersi said Melbourne’s streets were ‘full of blood’.

‘We really need to start asking ourselves real hard questions around what the actual f*** is going on,’ Mr Hersi said.

‘What is happening to our young people? When did this level of violence become OK?

‘When was it OK to ever take a life? They’re kids, being killed for what? Our young kids are dropping like flies.’

Police are yet to charge anyone over the deadly attack.

Youth gangs remain a main focal point of Victoria Police, with crackdowns on gang crime ongoing.

From November 24 to 27 as part of Operation Alliance, Victoria Police arrested more than 30 youth gang members across metropolitan Melbourne.

Police launched Operation Alliance in September 2020, a statewide operation aimed at disrupting and dismantling youth gangs.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Mark Galliott said the collaborative efforts from police forces are breaking the cycle of reoffending.

‘We will maintain a concentrated and combined focus on those who seek to commit violent crimes and jeopardise the safety of the rest of the community,’ he said.

‘However, we know arrests and court hearings are only one strategy to reduce youth crime and that police also play a role in breaking the cycle of reoffending and diverting these people away from a life of crime.

‘In a pleasing sign, we continue to see increased compliance with bail conditions from those connected to youth gangs, which is a positive behavioural change.’
