Melbourne Cup 2017: The men raising the style stakes

It’s the style set’s opportunity to show the nation what they’re made of.

And while countless column inches and fashion pieces are dedicated to the women who dress to impress and hit the mark, spare a thought for the men who just want a bit of the limelight.

From two-piece suits emblazoned with racehorses to a man rocking a furry coat as if he were prepared for a Russian blizzard, here FEMAIL takes a look at some of the weird and wonderful male punters’ outfits from the day.

He paired this with shiny black shoes and a co-ordinating pink bow tie and handkerchief.

The forecasted poor weather didn’t appear to dampen countless men’s spirits.

There was one man, however, who came well-prepared for the day’s predicted bad weather.

Carrying a blue Lavazza coffee cup and wearing a knee-length, furry, Russian-inspired coat, the Flemington guest smirked for the camera, clearly delighted that he – for one – will not be feeling the cold today.

Other male attendees rocked floral jeans with shirts, hats and bright colour, proving it’s not just about the women on Cup Day.

Another still opted for a camouflage-coloured two piece outfit, which he topped off with a bandana around his neck.

The 3,200-metre race kicks off at 3pm on Tuesday and is the most prestigious race of the Spring Racing season.

Attended by around 100,000 people from all over the country, it is known as ‘the race that stops the nation’.

The Melbourne Cup is also widely perceived to be one of the richest prizes in Australian sport.
