A girl who was allegedly joyriding in a stolen car filled with teenagers is fighting for her life in hospital after the driver slammed into a pole in Melbourne’s south-east.

The teenager was one of four passengers in the car, which crashed on the corner of Ralph Crescent and Cornell Place in Hampton park at 5.30pm on Tuesday.

Police believe the driver was attempting to go around the roundabout when they lost control of the car and slammed into a pole.

The girl, who is believed to be 15, was taken to hospital in a critical condition, while another girl and two boys believed to be aged between 13 and 15 were treated for minor injuries.

A Victoria Police statement confirmed that the gold Nissan Maxima the teenagers were driving was reported stolen from Springvale on August 30.

While police are yet to determine the exact reason for the crash, they are treating the incident as a hit and run given that the driver fled the scene.

‘The exact circumstances surrounding the collision are still being investigated,’ the statement said.

Police believe there may also be someone in the area who has footage of the car, which was seen driving erratically in the area earlier in the day.

As part of their investigations police are urging anyone who might have seen the car or have footage of it before or after the collision to get in contact.
