Melbourne man gets home from work to discover a brick wall covering his bedroom window

A man whose neighbours built a brick wall against his bedroom window, blocking the view entirely, says he feels like a prisoner in his own home.

Oscar Gordon, 33, from Melbourne, came home from work one month ago to find builders constructing a brick wall outside his window, with the permission of Yarra City Council.

The 33-year-old says he now wakes up in complete darkness every morning – taking a toll on his health.

Mr Gordon now describes his bedroom as a ‘glorified cupboard,’ which he says has been deemed inhabitable.

‘Prisoners in their cell get more light than I do in my bedroom,’ he told A Current Affair.

‘I wake up, I open my eyes and I’m like, ‘Oh yep’, put the gym gear on and I’m ready to make myself a coffee. I open my bedroom door and realise that it’s 2am.’

The former KISS FM executive digital content producer has been inundated with overwhelming support since taking to social media to express his frustration.

‘This is OUTRAGEOUS,’ radio presenter Fifi Box posted on Instagram.

Jackie O added: ‘Nobody puts baby in a basement.’

Even Mr Gordon’s good friend Sophie Monk was outraged.

‘Orange is the New Black has a better view!’ she posted.

The situation stunned foreman Keith Schleiger from Channel Nine’s The Block, who had to visit Mr Gordon’s home to see it for himself.

‘Oscar, I have never, ever seen anything remotely like this. I don’t know what to say,’ Keith said.

One helpful friend suggested Mr Gordon replace his view of a blank brick wall by installing a LCD television.

Mr Gordon has asked his real estate agent Hocking Stuart Richmond to install a skylight, but claims the one proposed did not meet  Building Code of Australia standards.

The real estate says it’s ‘working closely’ with Mr Gordon to reach an ‘agreeable solution’.

A spokeswoman said the team is doing everything it can to support Mr Gordon during this time, with ongoing discussions with the landlord and council.

Yarra City Council says the window was an ‘on-boundary window’ put in without its permission and the neighbours have the right to build up the boundary line.

In the meantime, Mr Gordon spends as much time as he can soaking up the views in his backyard to make up for the lack of sunlight into his bedroom.

‘Fingers crossed there’s a resolution soon,’ he posted on Facebook after the segment aired on Wednesday night.
