Melbourne restaurant Sash offer sashimi pizza

While it would be hard to find a person in the world who doesn’t love pizza, what exactly should go on top always stirs fierce debate.

And now it seems the next trendy topping to take over the world will have a fishy taste.

Melbourne restaurant Sash is behind sashimi pizza, which is trading pepperoni and cheese for the likes of tuna, crab, and salmon.

Sash co-owner Dave Nelson told Daily Mail Australia that sashimi pizza was actually inspired by the poke bowl movement.

‘We saw that as a fresh, clean, and healthier option that had some amazing flavours, and tried it on some pizzas,’ he said.

‘It worked and we came up with a whole concept of sashimi-style pizza and ended up getting carried away with sashimi tacos and sliders.’

Pizzas on Sash’s menu include a pie with tropical tuna, sashimi tuna, mango, strawberry, and avocado and another that has salmon and tuna sashimi topped with blue cheese, sriracha sauce, and mayonnaise.

The most expensive pizza on the menu, clocking in at $34, is the chili crab pizza – which is topped with Balsamic vinegar, some fruit and ginger.

Nelson found that the textures of sashimi and pizza ‘work really well together’.

‘You’ve got the sashimi, which is cold and soft, and the pizza base, which is warm with a crunch.’

‘It’s a great texture in the mouth and most of our items have that same philosophy – we wanted that soft-hard combination in as many dishes as possible’.

The sashimi pizza and tacos – Sash’s biggest sellers – will soon be making their way to Sydney, where Nelson revealed a new restaurant will open in April.

And the pizza has been so successful that Nelson said there is interest to expand it everywhere from Vietnam to Los Angeles.
