Melbourne shivers through the coldest winter morning in 50 YEARS as temperatures plummet to -6C – but the bad weather is not over yet

The east coast of Australia has shivered through yet another freeing morning, with minus zero temperatures causing significant delays out of Melbourne. 

Airport staff were forced to physically scrape frost from in bound and out bound aircraft, keeping many passengers waiting as it dropped to as low as -6C.

The freezing event made Wednesday morning the coldest late-winter morning in more than 50 years for Melbourne.

Travelers took to Twitter to share how their flights were affected, one said: ‘Just landed & we have to wait for the aircraft in our bay to be de-iced (not a regular thing here)’.

In the CBD early-morning commuters were hit with the equal coldest morning since June last year as it dropped to 0.8C about 6am.

It wasn’t much warmer for Sydneysiders, the temperature had dipped to a very chilly zero degrees just as most people were waking up for work.

At 6.30, the apparent temperature was a freezing -0.9 which warmed slightly to 0C by 7am then 1.8C by 8am.
