The discovery of the suspicious package comes just hours after police were called to Lonsdale St at 1.55pm.

They closed the street between Cohen Pl and Exhibition St for more than two hours.

Images from the scene showed an officer in full protective gear inspecting a black wheelie suitcase, found sitting outside a Spanish tapas restaurant and rooftop bar.

A spokesman for Victoria Police said officers were conducting a safety check, and no threat had been found.

The busy road has now reopened, but commuters are advised to avoid the area, as traffic delays remain.

The scare comes just hours after a man allegedly left a hand grenade in the smoking area of a hotel bar in the outskirts of the city.

Police said an investigation into the suspicious package found on Little Collins Street is continuing.
