Melbourne students face off in video of violent brawls

Students of a Melbourne College have reached out to 7 News to expose what they believe is a culture of violence at the school.

Footage emerged of violent attacks and fights between students at St Peters College in Melbourne’s south east.

The school informed 7 News that those students involved would face disciplinary action after a special assembly was called.

The footage that was shared with 7 News was taken by students on their mobile phones gave an idea of what was happening at the school students claimed.

In one clip two schoolgirls are getting encouragement from bystanders as they fight on school grounds and in another one a girl is thrown to the ground in the car park.

Other clips show even more violence taking place on school grounds including inside the school halls where a number of students are involved.

Concerned students from St Peter’s College in Melbourne’s south east went to the media with shocking videos claiming a culture of violence was taking hold at their school

In response to the shocking clips former Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police Kel Glare said police on school grounds needed to be reintroduced as a means of curbing the violent behaviour.

‘I think it’s appalling that these things are happening in schools. The older ones are old enough to know better, so that too is a problem,’ he told 7 News.

‘I think it’s an incredible problem but again, a police in schools program, one of the first things it can deal with is bullying.’

The videos show a number of fights around the school grounds including inside the halls as former police commissioner says police intervention is needed or things will only escalate

Mr Glare said ignoring the situation or not taking it seriously would be unwise.

‘It will get worse, there’s no question about that. There are, in some places, ethnic tensions in the schools,’ he said.

The school told 7 News it was addressing the incidents as seriously as possible with a special assembly expected to be held on Monday morning to address the ongoing issues.

An official statement from St Peter's College principal Chris Black said the school has acted promptly and will use correct protocol to address the incidents and the students involved, a special assembly is set for Monday morning.
