Men and women reveal top behaviours they consider cheating

The REAL definition of ‘cheating’ revealed: Men and women list the actions they consider to be adulterous – and you might be surprised

  • Being unfaithful to a partner is no longer a case of simply sleeping with another
  • Technology has paved the way for people to connect with others with more ease
  • A survey by those who’ve been unfaithful reveals what else counts as cheating
  • Behaviours include forming an emotional bond with another and erotic texting

A new survey by dating service Ashley Madison has found that adulterous behaviours are no longer limited to just being physical with another person.

In fact, more than half of the Australian men and women questioned admitted that of all the ‘cheating’ actions, forming an emotional bond ranked as the highest form of infidelity.

As well as this, members of the agency – who’ve all been cheaters themselves – revealed a list of other behaviours they considered cheating.

Over 40 per cent of respondents said sending naked photos to someone other than their partner ranked as a significant form of cheating.

A similar number also declared sending erotically worded text messages as being an act of infidelity.

While an amicable relationship with an ex-partner doesn’t seem unreasonable, depending on the intensity, there may be grounds to consider this cheating.

A third of respondents revealed this was an action they considered dubious.

The same number also said maintaining a profile on a dating app, once you’re in a committed relationship was also questionable behaviour.

Top actions that are considered to be cheating behaviours:

Forming a deep emotional bond with someone else – 55 per cent

Sending naked pictures to someone other than me – 46 per cent

Texting erotic messages to someone other than me – 44 per cent

Maintaining an online dating profile – 29 per cent

Spending time with their ex-partner – 29 per cent

Casual flirting with someone other than me – 18 per cent

Thinking about someone other than me when having sex with me – 18 per cent

Going out to dinner with someone who is the opposite sex – 18 per cent

Communicating with their ex – 16 per cent

Fantasizing about someone else – 13 per cent

20 per cent also ranked flirtatious behaviour as cheating.

The same number of respondents also said thinking about another during sex was something they felt could be considered dishonest.

20 per cent also ranked taking another out to dinner as suspicious, however, something as simple as chatting to an ex barely rated above 10 per cent.

‘Modern monogamy is becoming more and more vague so it really boils down to communication between couples and negotiating the terms of a marriage in an open way,’ said Isabella Mise, director of communications at Ashely Madison.

‘When couples aren’t on the same page, or one partner simply isn’t getting what they need, other options become desirable.

‘Even when that’s as simple as finding someone to talk to.’
