A mentally ill man who was buried alive in a landslide was rescued by troops using a bomb-sniffing dog, Indian military chiefs revealed. 

Pradeep Kumar, who was known in the Jammu-Kashmir region for wandering along a highway, was buried there overnight Tuesday after heavy rains triggered a landslide.

An army unit patrolling the road the next day along with a sniffer dog named Ajaxi discovered Kumar, and managed to dig him out.

Video from the scene shows the soldiers working to free Kumar, who appears dazed.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital, NDTV reported, but was unable to speak due to the shock of the accident.

Multiple landslides hit the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway last week amid heavy rains, completely severing the road.

Army units were brought in to clear the route, which is the only all-weather highway that links Kashmir with the rest of India.

Ajaxi was awarded a commendation disc for her work, along with her handler and their commanding officer who called for help.
