A British woman who has only just moved to Australia returned home this week to find a humongous python wrapped about her decorative Christmas tree.

Leanne Chapman, from Brisbane, was shocked to discover a huge three metre python curled in the branches of her tree on Thursday evening.

‘We got home from work and there’s a couple of butcher birds that visit every day and they were just kicking off on the balcony, going crazy,’ Chapman told 7 News.

A woman has returned home to find one thing you don’t want to see under your Christmas tree

Ms Chapman said her partner started to film the birds and leaned on the tree with no idea that the constricting snake was wrapped around its branches.

She said the reptile wasn’t bothered by them and sat there placidly as they watched through the window.

The family didn’t realise how big it was until it moved.

To make matters more frightening, Ms Chapman is from England and this is her first Christmas in Australia.

After the initial shock were off, she said it was quite fascinating to see the snake.

‘It was actually quite nice to see it that close up because I’ve never seen anything like it before’.

The family said they decided to leave the snake alone.

It slithered away on its own about 10:30pm that night – possibly to find another tree to decorate.
