  • A witness said there were ‘a lot of really shaken young queer people’ as a result
  • Polaris said hateful fans should ‘not wear our merch’ or come to their concerts

Australian metalcore band Polaris has slammed fans who spat on drag queens and called them ‘disgusting creatures’ after watching their concert.

Sydney musician Brendan Maclean said he saw fans wearing Polaris merchandise leaving Sydney’s Enmore Theatre after the concert and spitting on drag queens in the bar next door on Friday night.

‘Polaris, your fans at Sydney Enmore walked to the bar next door and spat on the drag queens and called them ‘disgusting creatures’ – not your fault but thought you outta know,’ Mr Maclean wrote on Twitter on Saturday.

‘So upsetting, a lot of really shaken young queer people.’

The band’s official Twitter account quickly slammed the ‘abhorrent’ fans and told them that they were ‘not welcome’ at future shows.

‘This is abhorrent. To anyone who behaves like this: Do not come to our shows. Do not wear our merch. You are not welcome where we play and we don’t want you in our community,’ the band wrote on Twitter.

‘If you can’t treat people who are different to yourself with love and respect then sit yourself down and rethink yourself. On Mardi Gras weekend of all times, this is incredibly disappointing.

‘We have nothing but love for the queer community and we know (or at least hope) that the majority of our fans stand with us. This does not represent us.’

Impressed by the band’s response, Mr Maclean acknowledged that the behaviour of a small number of fans did not reflect their whole fanbase.

‘My sister was in the audience so sure: #NotAllPolarisFans,’ he wrote.

‘Some people are all very hard and punk until, heaven forbid, they see someone in a dress they don’t agree with. Anyway, happy Mardi Gras.’

Polaris is a metalcore band that consists of vocalist Jamie Hails, guitarists Ryan Siew and Rick Schneider, bassist Jake Steinhauser and drummer Daniel Furnari.

They formed in 2012 and were nominated for an ARIA Award for best hard rock in 2018 for their debut album The Mortal Coil.
