Mexico’s military kills 12 cartel members in a shootout just 10 miles from the border with Texas

  • The Mexican Army’s 16th Motorized Cavalry were met with fire in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico and killed 12 members of a hit squad linked to the Northeast Cartel
  • The incident took place approximately at 3am while the soldiers were patrolling the Fresnos neighborhood and were attacked by the Inferno Troop gang
  • The military said none of its soldiers were killed or wounded in the gun battle 

At least 12 members of a cartel were killed during a gun battle with the Mexican military in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas near the border with Texas on Friday.

Local media outlets reported a convoy from the Mexican Army’s 16th Motorized Cavalry was met with fire approximately at 3am local time by members of the Tropa del Infierno [Inferno Troop], a hit squad tied to the Cártel del Noreste [Northeast Cartel].

The gun battle took place on a road in the Nuevo Laredo neighborhood of Fresnos, a 10-mile drive from the Juárez–Lincoln International Bridge, which connects the United States and Mexico over the Rio Grande.

Images filtered on social media Friday afternoon showed the bodies of the cartel members lying on the back of a pickup truck, where they purportedly launched their assault. 

Several other Tropa del Infierno henchmen were also photographed lying on the side of the road.

Army officials did not report any casualties or injuries on their part following the war-like battle. At least three military vehicles were damaged in the attack.

Soldiers recovered 12 assault rifles, including two Barrett .50 caliber sniper rifles and eight AR-15 rifles.

The Cártel del Noreste was founded in 2014 as a sub-division under the then-powerful Los Zetas criminal organization and is led by Juan Gerardo ‘El Huevo’ Treviño Chavez. 

The criminal organization has a presence in the northeast states of Coahuila, Tamaulipas, Nuevo León and the north-central states of San Luis Potosí and Zacatecas.

The Tamaulipa’s prosecutor’s offices is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
