Michael Carrick has revealed his lengthy absence from the Manchester United first team was due to a heart-related problem.

The United midfielder has been out of action since September for, until now, an unknown reason.

But Carrick has released a statement over Twitter, which states he has been suffering from an ‘irregular heart rhythm’.

In the statement Carrick highlights the problem, claiming he felt ‘strange’ whilst appearing in United’s 4-1 Carabao Cup win earlier this season.

The 36-year-old also stated he has received medical treatment for the heart problem, through a procedure known as ‘cardiac ablation’, before reassuring supporters and followers of fitness.

The former England international made it clear he is hoping to return to Jose Mourinho’s side shortly.
