Michael Cohen purchases $6.7 million apartment in New York City

Longtime Donald Trump attorney Michael Cohen bought a $6.7 million Tribeca apartment in New York in April, it has been revealed.

It was a momentous month for Cohen. The FBI raided his home, office, and a hotel where he was staying in April, and the case is now being pursued by prosecutors in the Southern District of New York.

Cohen picked up the 2,697 sq ft unit which has four bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms after a price drop from $7.5 million according to an earlier listing, the Wall Street Journal reported.

A source close to the deal told the paper that he was in a hurry to make a purchase due to an impending tax event following the sale of his unit in Trump World Tower last year for $3.3 million, meaning making the deadline allowed him to get a lower tax bill.

The 19th floor apartment comes with a private elevator and has combined taxes and common charges of $7,265 per month, according to Variety.

He took out a $3.5 million short-term loan from developers who built the new construction for the purchase rather than using a traditional lender, a practice that has been called unusual in New York.

In the building, which has 157 units, there is a 3,000-square-foot fitness center, two swimming pools, hair salon and heated stone hammam and children’s playroom.

A series of reports have revealed that Cohen is being investigated for possible bank fraud, campaign finance issues, and tax issues related to his Taxi medallion business.

He is falling under intense pressure to cooperate with authorities particularly should he be charged with any crime.

Cohen is known as a fixer for Donald Trump. He negotiated the non-disclosure agreement and $130,000 payment for porn star Stormy Daniels, who claims she had an affair with Trump.

He recently told ABC News that he put his country and his family first.

Attorney Lanny Davis, who has joined the team representing Cohen, said Cohen was making a ‘declaration of independence’ from Trump when he gave his shocking interview.

Cohen’s jaw-dropping interview with George Stephanopolous on July 2 was interpreted in various ways – a sign the president’s former personal lawyer was going to ‘flip’ and give testimony; a signal to Team Trump he was no longer on their side; or a plea to get Trump’s legal fund to cover Cohen’s own mounting defense costs.

‘There’s a reason that he said at the very end of the interview with Mr. Stephanopoulos that he took these contrary positions to Mr. Trump, who he previously said he would take a bullet for, a comment that I believe he would not say today,’ Davis told The Hill’s new morning TV show.

‘The reason he said is, ‘I will not be a punching bag as part of somebody else’s defense strategy,” Davis added. ‘This was a declaration of independence two days before July 4,’ he said.
