Michael Flynn cancels Montana campaign appearance due to unspecified ‘family emergency’

Donald Trump’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn canceled a campaign appearance Sunday in Montana for Republican US Senate candidate Troy Downing due to an unspecified ‘family emergency.’

The cancellation of Sunday’s event was announced by Flynn in a video posted by Downing’s campaign.

Trump fired Flynn in February 2017. White House officials said he misled them about his Russian contacts.

The former general is one of 19 people charged in the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 US election.   

In December, Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about this conversations with Russia and about his role as a lobbyist for Turkey.

He has agreed to cooperate with the investigation that looking into whether there was collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign during the 2016 general election.

Downing, who has called the retired general an American patriot, is one of four candidates seeking the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic US Senator Jon Tester.

Last week, Trump (pictured) called Tester to resign, saying cryptically: 'I know things about the senator' that would cost the incumbent his home-state support.

The Montana Democrat told CNN’s Anderson Cooper that Jackson would hand out prescriptions ‘like candy.’ 

‘[HE] go down the aisle way of the airplane and say, ‘All right, who wants to go to sleep?’ And hand out the prescription drugs like they were candy…and put them to sleep and then give them the drugs to wake them back up again,’ HE SAID.

In a video endorsing Downing, Flynn said Downing’s experience as a combat veteran made him the best candidate in the June primary.

Downing spokesman Kevin Gardner said the campaign would try to reschedule Flynn’s appearance for a later date. No further details were available on the nature of Flynn’s family emergency, Gardner said.
