The star Olympian first met his future wife at the 2007 Espy Awards.

They began their relationship in 2009, though it had rocky patches along the way.

The two split in 2012 in advance of the Summer Olympics, at which Michael won four gold and two silver medals, making him the most successful swimmer that year and the most decorated Olympian ever.

He announced a (temporary) retirement following the London games, and renewed his relationship with the former Miss California in 2014.

Michael spoke with People magazine in 2016 about hoping for a daughter after the birth of the first son.

‘We would love a girl,’ he said. ‘Love, love, love a girl. We wanted a boy first, just in case we did have other children, [so] he could be the protector of his younger sibling or siblings.’

He added: ‘So we started off on a perfect note: We got a boy. We got a beautiful, healthy baby boy, and we’re looking to continue to grow our family.’

Now that they’ve had two boys, perhaps the third time is the charm.
