Michy Batshuayi kicks ball into his own face while celebrating Belgium goal

Twitter exploded in a cacophony of memes after striker Michy Batshuayi decided to celebrate Belgium’s goal by booting the ball into his own face.

After Adnan Janujaz put Belgium 1-0 up against England on Thursday with a curling effort from the edge of the box, Batshuayi decided a little extra celebration was required.

As his teammates peeled off in celebration, footage showed him picking up the ball before attempting to boot it into the net for a second time.

Unfortunately the ball rebounded off the post and clattered into the blundering striker’s face.

Within minutes of his error the Belgian forward had become an internet sensation with GIFs and pictures of him being shared across the world.

And straight after the full-time whistle, Batshuayi took to Twitter to discuss the error.

‘Ahahha I knew I would be f****d the minute I come to my mentions. Why am I so stupid bro. S*** hurts,’ the embarrassed forward tweeted.

He later tweeted a clip of the hilarious incident, making reference to Jesse Lingard’s Fortnite video game inspired celebration: ‘Fortnite celebrations so overrated bro I had to create something new’.

To add to his pain, former internationals also got in on the action with Dutch midfielder Rafael Van der Vaart tweeting: ‘Luckily social media wasn’t that big back in my day… I hope you’re okay mate.’

Elsewhere, England fans were in jubilant mood despite their defeat as they celebrated being on the perceived ‘easier side’ of the knockout stages draw.

Fans tweeted videos showing England manager Gareth Southgate sarcastically celebrating the defeat.

But some fans seemed less enthralled by the action as they made reference to the lack of intensity of the players.

England now go on to play Colombia in Moscow on Tuesday July 3 next week in a match which will again be televised by ITV.
